What these studies usually fail to add is that Galdosian realism is highly complex and ironic, shot through with self-reflexive challenges to the notion of the novel as mirror of society. He has acquired a reputation as the creator of more strong women characters than perhaps any other author in Peninsular fiction. Since feminist scholarship is such a heterogeneous and rapidly evolving field, I would like to begin by outlining the kind of feminist criticism practised here and discussing some of the terms that will be central to this book, such as gender and ideology.
